In early 2026, Apple launched the Creator Studio. A subscription-based suite of apps aimed at creators for productivity, and also to help capture and edit videos and photos. In the creative suite of apps, Adobe is the undisputed leader in the market. Will Apple’s effort loosen Adobe’s stranglehold on the creative headspace?

Adobe’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Adobe’s suite of applications has been the industry standard for creatives. There is a reason why the word “Photoshop” has become a verb describing edited photos. Adobe’s flagship products, Photoshop and Illustrator has been a staple on Macs since the proverbial garage days of each company’s founding.

One major push factor for Adobe users is Adobe’s change of stance on its software pricing from a single license for a version to a subscription service. On one hand, there’s some reasoning why Adobe use the subscription route: you can only improve so much year after year that existing users won’t be incentivised to upgrade, and a subscription insures your company’s cash flow and ultimately survival. However, the dark side of the subscription route is that the company is not incentivized to improve its product and increase the prices as the shareholders demand them.
Adobe’s app in their Creative Cloud suite also has no equivalent compared to Apple’s offering. There’s no Lightroom, Adobe Stock, Firefly, Illustrator (Pixelmator has a long way to go), and InDesign in Apple’s lineup. Some of these are essential tools for a creative business. Apple does offer free in-house alternatives to Adobe’s solution, like Preview for Acrobat Pro, but there are just a few features in Adobe’s paid solution that aren’t available in Apple’s free solution.
Apple’s Strengths and Weaknesses

In many ways, Apple’s Creator Studio is a repackaging of existing apps and turn it into something more attractive. Apple’s services are the fastest-growing and biggest-margin amongst Apple’s business segments. It’s not inconceivable that Apple’s top brass is looking to expand its service offerings.

Even before the Creator Studio, Apple’s suite of video editing and music creation apps like Final Cut Pro, Compressor, Motion, and Logic Pro has been a force of nature in the industry. They even help creators win major awards such as Grammys, Golden Globes, Emmys, and even Oscars. So Apple’s tools are already industry-proven.

One of Apple’s challenges is getting photo pro editing software to challenge the king: Photoshop. For years, Pixelmator Pro was one of the leading contenders of Photoshop alternative, which made it attractive as an aqusition by Apple. We did recommend Pixalmator Pro as the Photoshop alternative a while back. While Adobe has Illustrator for vector and Photoshop for raster images, Pixelmator Pro does both. But there’s a saying: jack of all trades, master of none. Eventually, I believe that Pixelmator Pro will split into multiple products as more and more features creep in.
For small-time creators like myself, pricing is one of the biggest factor is adapting a software paradigm. One reason why people move to Final Cut Pro and Pixelmator Pro is that most people do not want to pay a subscription service for something that they rarely use, or more importantly, the current suite of app is good enough that you do not really need an upgrade. But for larger companies, pricing is not a major factor. Apple’s Final Cut Pro and other has been lower priced than Adobe’s solution, but it doesn’t mean people are coming to Apple from Adobe in droves.
One key difference between Adobe and Apple is that Apple provides a one-time payment for people who do not want to pay a monthly subscription. So, if you do not really use or need advanced features, a one-time payment is a very good deal.
Conclusion
Apple and Adobe have been working with and competing against each other since their founding years. Apple and Adobe has been competing in the video editing space for decades, and Apple coming up with its own photo editing solution is no surprise. Although Apple’s Pixelmator Pro is not as capable as Photoshop, it is good enough for 90% of users out there. Apple’s pricing is also very attractive, which makes a good push factor for those who are looking for Adobe alternatives. Although Adobe has a few things that Apple doesn’t do, like Dreamweaver, there are other free alternatives that is just if not better.
In the end, I believe Apple is giving Adobe a run for its money as it is providing a solution that is quite as good at a significantly lower cost.
