This year, Apple updated both the iPhone in their annual September event and the iPad Mini via press release. The last time the iPad Mini was updated was in September 2021, when Apple released the iPhone 13 Pro Max. As Apple enlarged the screen of the iPhone 16 Pro Max to 6.9" while the iPad Mini retains its 8.3" screen, it begs the question if the iPad Mini can be a great iPhone too.

WWDC is a software-focused event outlining Apple’s plans for the next twelve months. Unlike hardware announcements that are prone to leaks in the supply chain, the software is entirely controlled by Apple so rumors about what will shown are scant.

The keynote started with Apple’s SVP of software engineering, Craig Federighi, motivating their time to jump out of an airplane with Mötley Crüe’s 80s classic “Kickstart My Heart” sung in the background. As they jumped and opened their parachutes unveiling “Apple presents …” and credit, Tim Cook the CEO on the roof of the Apple Park building welcoming you to WWDC 2024. What an entrance. After that, it’s the usual corporate news announcements like new shows coming to Apple TV including the long-awaited second season of Severance.

In early May 2024, Apple held an event in which they unveiled the most powerful consumer device ever. And no, it’s not a gaming laptop, but a tablet that a lot of people mostly use to watch streaming cat videos. Engineering-wise, Apple managed to pack a lot of power in a slab of glass and metal barely 5mm thick, which is around 100 sheets of paper.

However, given they bumped up the price of the iPad Pro, so now it starts at $1299 for the 13", and the new Magic Keyboard starts at $299, the comparison with their own MacBook Pro is inevitable. Did Apple manage to finally replace the laptop with the tablet of the future?

WWDC 2021 keynote come and went and wow, there’s a lot to unpack. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a new 16-inch MacBook but there is tons of software update in store for us in the future. Since there’s a lot to cover, each feature will be as brief and concise as possible.

If you do not want to go through the laundry list of features and updates, the key takeaway from this WWDC is that Apple is building features for ecosystem-wide usage instead of for a specific devise. Now the hardware level is getting streamlined, Apple’s focus is being the best ecosystem out there, not just being a one-device company.

iPadOS was introduced in 2019 as Apple wanted to branch out the iPad into its own platform and bring it closer to the macOS. One of the key features it brings is some windowing control and a slew of keyboard shortcuts to make the iPadOS experience closer to a laptop experience.
