After years of bad news, competitors begining to catch up and Apple announced that they are moving away from Intel to their own chip, it is very easy to think that Intel is a sinking ship that needs to be abandon. But Intel is a very big ship and it will take a while for Intel to be truly dead.
This is Intel chart detailing revenue by segment since 2016 until 2020 and the dark blue bars is the client computing group, basically most consumer products like desktops and laptop. Despite being battered by vulnerabilities like RowHammer, competitors like AMD catching up and beating Intel on performance and price offerings and big customer like Intel moving away from Core chips, the quarterly sales seems to be stable.
In fact you can say with the growth of highly profitable server chip, Intel had a better year than usual.
Yes, Intel does has issues like moving to 10nm and 7nm, the vulnerabilities and Apple M1 is indeed a wake-up call, things at Intel does need to be fixed and they are doing it in a way.
They replaced their CEO and also their chief architect. and the 12th gen Core processor looks more like Apple’s M1 with multi function cores on a single die. Whether this will bring Intel back on track or not is yet be seen, but I would not think Intel will be dead in the next five years.
