The MacBook Neo is an Apple laptop launched in March 2026. It represents a brand-new line of laptops by Apple, introduced in 2015, alongside the MacBook. In many ways, the MacBook Neo is everything that the MacBook is, which is small and sleek, but in a much better form factor and more accessible than ever.
The X Factor
The specs of the MacBook Neo are something like a turkey sandwich that you made after Thanksgiving. The chip is from an iPhone 16 Pro, the screen is from the old 13-inch MacBook Air. You can bet the storage is from the base iPhone 16. Somehow, Apple managed to make this work because, despite being a parts bin special, Apple made this from the ground up to be special.
To reach the $599 or $499 (actual) goal, compromises will need to be made. The most notable is the use of the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro. Apple has already paid for the production line and made billions from selling the iPhone 16 Pro. So, the per unit cost is already low for Apple since they didn’t create anything new. Heck, Apple used the A19 Pro board from the iPhone 17 Pro for the new Studio Display XDR.
Because they are using a chip that is meant for phones instead of laptops, they can get away with putting a smaller battery and a tiny charger. The MacBook Neo uses a 36.5 wH battery instead of the 53.8-wH battery used for the MacBook Air. They also used a slightly worse keyboard (no backlight), camera (only 1080p), speakers (only 2), touchpad (no haptic feedback), and storage (slower than MacBook Air). But their target is not maximum performance, but maximum performance that you can get in a $250 budget.
Yes, you read that right. To make this a product, Apple has to figure out how to create the best laptop that costs less than $250 to produce. The economies of scale sure do help, but Apple made this using production lines that already paid for itself, like the iPhone 16 Pro board.
Why this is important
The pricing will certainly send a shockwave through the budget computing industry. While there are $600 - $700 laptop on the market, there are none that have this kind of build quality, this kind of screen, or this kind of ecosystem. The MacBook Neo is a unique product that has no competition.
More important than selling a cheap laptop for students and grandmothers is Apple securing future customers for their future products. The idea is, once those highschool or even pre-school kids started using Apple products when they are young, they will continue to buy Apple products as they grow older and older. Making an accessible product for the education market is Apple’s true goal with the MacBook Neo. Those users will end up buying iPhones, AirPods, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro.
I can imagine the future iteration will have a MacBook Neo that is very compelling to use. Like a MacBook Neo with an A19 Pro chip that comes with 12GB of memory and an option of 1TB of storage. That will be a hot product. Now that it has been established that the Pro iPhones can run macOS quite well, will there be a product in the future where you can dock your iPhone Pro and it pops out macOS?
