For the review of the M1 iMac released in 2021, read here

Apple updated the iMac during the October event. It was the first Mac to be showcased, an amuse-bouche. On the surface, it’s a spec bump, but the devil is in the details.

What’s New

Here are the changes that come for 2024

  • M4 processor: Obviously the biggest game changer. The new M4 processor is far faster than the M3 it replaces
  • 16GB starting memory: This is the biggest and import important change in my opinion. Due to the requirements of Apple Intelligence, all new Macs now have at least 16GB starting memory. It’s a big deal since you don’t have to pay $200 to Apple for what is a $20 worth of upgrade. The next improvement would change the starting storage to 512GB but that is a fight for another day.
  • USB-C on Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse: But all the port positions are the same. Meaning the USB-C port is at the bottom of the mouse.
  • Nano Texture glass option: You can now spec out your iMac with Nano Texture glass that greatly reduces glare for $200. Only available on certain models.
  • More display support: You can connect two 6K60 displays to the iMac instead of one previously. This feature is only available on certain models.
  • All ports are Thunderbolt 4: Previously, two out of four ports in the iMac were Thunderbolt. Thanks to M4, all ports are now Thunderbolt 4.
  • Colors: Apple claims new vibrant colors, but to be honest, it looks the same to me.

2024

2021

All ports in the iMac 2024 are now Thunderbolt 4. Entry level version you'll get two, the higher tier get four like the one shown.

Pricing Guide

The entry-level model starts at $1,299, but there are a lot of missing items compared to the next higher tier:

  • No Ethernet port: Despite advancements in Wi-Fi technology, an Ethernet port is a lot more stable, especially in a device-dense environment.
  • No Nano-Texture glass option: If you are working in a bright environment, this option is not available at entry-level
  • USB-C ports: You’ll get only two USB-C ports instead of four
  • External Display support: You can connect only to one 6K60 display instead of two
  • No TouchID: TouchID is a very convenient way to login to your iMac. You don’t have this option on the entry-level iMac.

The entry-level iMac is made for education or computer lab customers, so it is very stripped down.

Which One To Get??

Get the $1499 version. There is so much value for the extra $200.

Conclusion

The 2024 iMac is a spec bump update. However, the M4 itself is a very substantial update.
