Apple Watch is the ultimate companion product for the iPhone. It’s also a personal health monitor jam-packed with sensors that measure your heart, your breathing, your blood oxygen, and even your period for the ladies. For some, it’s the annoying watch that beeps at every message you receive, which can be turned off of course. After 10 years, the Apple Watch has finally been “revised” during the September event.
Design
The Apple Watch design has received the iconic status. Even from afar and switched off, you would know this particular design is an Apple Watch. So just like Omega, Rolex, and other big names in the watch industry, it does not make sense for Apple to abandon their iconic design for the sake of change.
Apple did make a big change this year by making the watch bigger and thinner which entails significant engineering changes trying to redesign and rearrange the internals while adding new features to the watch with consideration for future features. Despite the changes in size, material, and components, the design language remains the same.
As for material, Apple dropped stainless steel in favor of titanium as their high-end tier. The titanium comes in natural, gold, and slate finishes. For the Hermes edition, there is an exclusive silver finish.
Functions and Improvements
A lot of the functions from Series 9 are carried over the Series 10. However, Apple added new features for the Series 10
- Faster charging: Apple intends you to wear the watch at all times, including when you sleep. So the Apple Watch can charge from 0% to 80% in 30 minutes, just about the time for you to take a shower.
- Sleep Apnea detection: Sleep tracking is available in Series 9 of the Apple Watch. In Series 10, it takes one step further, an FDA-approved Sleep Apnea function that will alert you if your sleep is not optimal.
- Water Depth & Temperature Sensor: The water depth and temperature sensor is available in the Ultra line of Apple Watch but now it comes to the base version. However, it only rated for 6m of depth instead of 40m in the Apple Watch Ultra.
- S10 SiP: The Series 10 caries the S10 SiP which is the fastest and most capable processor in any Apple Watch to date.
Editions
Apple has long-standing partnership with Nike for sports and Hermes for luxury, and this year is no different. One noticeable difference is the Nike edition is more integrated with the rest of the Apple Watch line-up while the Hermés edition is still its product. Each edition has its exclusive watch face and band that is not available in the standard edition.
The Hermés edition has an exclusive silver titanium finish. Furthermore, Hermés introduced a new stainless steel band called the Grand H strap.
Conclusion
Apple has their playbook wired down to the inch. Some might yearn for things to rapidly change from one version to another, but Apple’s work is more than just one product. The iPhone, the Apple Watch, the AirPods, another iPad, and the Mac all work in an orchestra. The conductor is the Apple ecosystem which gives great harmony. The harmony that generates $1 billion in revenue per day for Apple.
Apple does incremental updates for each of its products like the Apple Watch, but the entire ecosystem changes with these small updates.
